SEO Tip 8
Draw the line!!
If you are a client of an SEO company or considering hiring one to increase visitors etc then this post will be handy for you to take a look at to understand a little of the SEO firms workings. If you are an SEO firm or starting out in an SEO career then you may have already picked up on this or you may just need a little reminder as we all do sometimes...read on!
It is so tempting when you are working for a client, especially when just starting out in the world of SEO and you're eager to please everyone, to go that extra mile and do a lot of free work on their site. I used to do it all of the time, you do the hours that you have qouted for and the client has agreed to pay but when trawling through the site, you think "well I could just clean up the code a little" or "a few extra directory submissions would really make it fly for this keyword".
Now don't get me wrong there's nothing wrong with going the extra mile for your cliwents, we do it everyday, only the difference is that now we get paid for it and strangely, the clients are a lot happier to pay for it. You see because there is a great lack of knowledge of SEO and SEO Firms in the UK and especially in the West Midlands area, whenever you tell the client that you've done x and y but you spent 5 hours doing z for free, they simply get suspicious and quite rightly so. After all, if you ever went to a mechanic and they said "we fixed your car, and oh by the way, we also spent 5 hour tinkering with it" then you'd get a little suspicious as they haven't stuck to their contract in doing extra work.
We find it loads easier nowadays to simply do the seo work that we are contracted to do as that is the professional way to go about it after all and then make further recommendations with costs agreed upfront before any extra work is carried out. We also find it loads more rewarding to actually get paid for the work that we do funily enough!!
